Wasting vs. Donating

The choice between donating your clothes or throwing them away may seem like an insignificant choice, however, donation has long term global benefits that can make a bigger difference than most people anticipate. The benefits include conserving resources, supports people in need, and reduces pollution.

The process of producing clothes uses extensive water resources, energy, and raw material. Donating reduces the demand for new resources, which prevents clothes from ending up in waste earlier.  When you choose to throw away clothes, they end up in landfills, contributing to the ever growing issue of landfill overload. Textiles, materials made from fibers that are made into fabric, take years, if not longer, to decompose and release harmful chemicals into the atmosphere.

Donation of clothes can also assist others in various ways, specifically providing affordable clothing to those who need it. In times of crisis, such as natural catastrophes or homelessness, these clothes can be utilized to help those who have lost everything. Lastly, many children from low income families or foster care struggle with access to new clothes, which is another reason why donating your clothes can go a long way.

The fashion industry is a major contributor to carbon emissions on our planet. You personally can cut the amount of pollution associated with transportation and the fabrication process of clothes. This process also uses dyes and chemicals that can seep into nearby water sources, so chemical pollution would be another decreased target.

Overall, donating clothes is the way to go! There are numerous advantages to donating these products, as opposed to the negative consequences of putting these items to waste. Help your community, the environment, and the entirety of the Earth with the simple act of donating a t-shirt!
